AOB 5 (Evaluation)
During the production process there was no need for me to work in a team because I was on my own. Although when It came to taking images for the work in the studio, I was accompanied by several members of staff and the subject of the photos, I believe I coped well and was able to communicate well with the other people involved while setting up the photo shoot and during the taking. My managing of time was average at best, although I made a production plan; it’s hard to say that I stuck to it. During this piece my ability to meet deadlines was better than it had been previously, with work being handed in on time and not much being late in apart from a few pieces, but no where near as much as before, despite this though it can still be identified as one of my weakness' and needs to be addressed by myself in order to improve.
The final draft of the CD front and back cover and the booklet is slightly different to the way I had planned it to finish. Despite this I think it is better than what I had expected myself to produce. I think that comparing it to a professionally produced CD cover, it would not be too different in terms of layout and style. For the genre of hip hop and this specific target audience i believe it would work well sitting on a shelf amongst a range of popular artists. The effects used such as adjusting the levels, blending, and the brightness and contrast are all similar to what can be found on an advanced cover, advanced being a busy piece of work with lots of things going on in it, as opposed to a simple cover with maybe just a face and simple text.
Throughout the production, various meetings were held between myself and the client. During these meetings it was decided on what needed to be altered or removed from the work. At one meeting it was noticed that the text itself and the position it was in was making it difficult to read and be noticed, so I went away after and worked on it, making it clearer using white coloring and changing the position to the top right and bottom left corners. There was also a big gap in the top right corner of the piece, so the client suggested that a sticker could be placed there to fill the space, once again I went away and made the change, by putting a yellow caution sign in the gap and adding some text to it.
Throughout the production process i had to learn new techniques and figure out ways of getting certain effects by simply experimenting with different tools in photoshop, hopefully to achieve a cataclysm effect overall. Mainly the use of blending was the biggest task to get through, the main photo had to be cut and then i placed it in front of an image of central park in New York. I then adjusted the levels and the brightness of the background and the subject until it was blended nicely and didn't look like an image was just placed over the top. To get the effect of the water through the city i used an image of a big wave and placed it over the top of the New York image, i then lowered the opacity and rubbed out parts of the water so that bits of the buildings below could be seen, this gave the effect that the water was rushing over the buildings. I used sections of fire on some of the buildings which had to be blended in and the meteors i used had to be given a motion blur to give the effect that they were moving/falling. On the back cover i went for the same style but from a ground level. Again i got an image of a city and placed rushing water over the top, i used some water brushes which i downloaded to help with the blending to give a splash effect. To add to the sense of danger i added a plane into the surging water, since this has no need to be there, it comes unexpectedly and makes you realize that something big is happening.
There was one particular legal and ethical requirement that had to be dealt with. First of all I had to gain the acceptance of the main subject for the photo shoot and if I was allowed to use them in my work. I then realized that if the CD was to go on sale in a store and sell lots of copies then a contract would have to be drawn up, to say that the main subject was entitled to some of the profit because its his face that is on the cover. Also if the CD was to actually be produced and sold in music stores, i would have had to contact all the people who own the images i used and asked for permission over the use of the pictures.
The quality of my final produced pieces (front & back covers) is slightly better than what i had expected from myself and im extremely happy with the outcomes of both. I knew that the product would be of good quality because im familiar with photoshop and work on other things around this, so when i look at them both together i see it as above what i had expected. My strengths have been knowing my way round the program photoshop and the wide knowledge of techniques i have used from previous experience. Also my ability to listen to new ideas and suggestions and make changes accordingly was good, as there were a few aspects that needed to be addressed. My weakness's have been most certainly meeting deadlines and writing work up on the blog in time, this is the part i really do not enjoy but nevertheless it has to be done and this could be the reason why work like this is sometimes late. If you look at my production plan, then you will see that the final product i produced looks nothing like how i set it out to be. This is because, when i was drafting my product and experimenting, the original design didnt look very good, so i changed it and took inspiration from the film posters that were advertising the new movie 2012 at the time.
